CHAPTER ELEVEN

“You want me to what now?” I couldn’t believe he was even asking.

“Come on, you’re a blood mage. It’s what you do!” Val insisted.

I put my hands on my hips. “Yes, I’m a blood mage. But a pretty terrible one. And I’ve only used someone else’s blood the one time!”

Well, that wasn’t entirely true. I’d used someone else’s blood one other time before that, too. During that accident five years ago. A shudder ran down my spine as I heard the screams in my head once more. Would they ever go away? Did I deserve for them to?

I shook my head to clear it. That line of thought was getting me nowhere.

“So? You can do it again, then.” Val crossed his arms in front of his chest and looked down on me, like the conversation was now finished.

My temper flared, and I wanted to smack him again, but I fought back the impulse. I still felt like he deserved it the one time I actually did punch him, but this didn’t call for it.

“Fine,” I said finally. “I suppose I can try. But where are we even going to find Beige Man’s blood?”

Val gestured all about him. “There’s tons of blood in this apartment. Some of it could be his.”

“I suppose, but which blood?” It was a fair question. “It’s not like I can sniff it out.”

And even if I could, why would I want to do that? Sniff around in dead people’s blood? Talk about gross? My stomach squirmed just thinking about it.

Val rubbed his chin. “Good point. I suppose some of the markings on the walls could have been made with his own blood. Maybe we start with those?”

I bit my bottom lip. “We could, I guess, but I’ll be honest with you. I’m still pretty tired from earlier, and I don’t have a ton of energy to go casting spells. Suppose I pick the wrong blood a few times. What then? I’ll be tapped out is what, and we’ll be no closer to our goal. Further, even, because then I’ll really need that nap.”

Val frowned. “I could give you another zap of energy, I suppose.”

I held out my hand toward him. “Ew. No.” I did not need him invading my personal bubble right now. Not while I still had so many thoughts running through my head. Some of them about him. “Let’s just try something else, please?”

“Well, there is one other place I can think of that might have Beige Man’s blood, but…”

“But what?”

Val chuckled. “Well, you’re not going to like it much.”
